Native Girl / Live audio-visual video performance in collaboration with Kevon D. Walker with support from North Eleven
ARC New Media exhibition / Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival / Opening event / Medulla Gallery
Documentation by ARC and David Gumbs / Thanks to all the organisers and audience members
2013

The live event allows the artist to experiment by combining these many layers of image and sound, to create a new narrative, reacting to the audience members during the performance.

Native girl re-investigates three Jamaican mythical and legendary female characters by portraying evocative moments from the stories associated with them. (The Rivermaid with her golden comb; Ol’Higue shedding her skin, Queen Nanny of the Maroons preparing an ambush on British soldiers). These contemporary incarnations are not alone. Forced to share the stage with each other, they also encounter Olivia’s alter-ego Whitey, who appears intermittently throughout the performance.
