video and photography installation
including: lover’s leap: 3min video
Sudden white consumes the tropical picturesque through photographic tableaux and a multi-layered video,
indulging Whitey in her appropriation of this space of utter difference; Jamaica.
The still images confront the ‘place image’* of her birth-land, as Whitey engages directly with Jamaica’s physical environment, questioning the current representations of this idyllic locale.
However, Whitey’s stillness and immediacy are displaced by the moving images in Lover’s Leap, where a young male executes a sequence of dancehall-style moves in a welcome escape from a harsh reality. The accompanying three riddims mark the shift between introspection and personal expression, as his body in motion permeates the static frame, disrupting the placid veil of the layered vivid landscapes.
